How to Choose a Sliding Gate Motor: The Ultimate Buyer’s Guide
Choosing the right sliding gate motor mainly depends on the weight and the dimensions of your gate. Using a motor that matches your gate weight ensures smooth operation, longer lifespan, and reliable performance. We offer a wide range of sliding gate motor kits including low voltage motor system , solar sliding gate systems, and heavy duty automatic gate motors for commercial use.
Selecting the right sliding gate automation is about more than just finding a motor that fits; it’s about ensuring long-term reliability and safety. As a technician at Tigerlink, I see many systems fail prematurely because the motor was poorly matched to the gate.
Follow this guide to ensure you choose a motor that will perform for years to come:
The most common mistake is choosing a motor that exactly matches your gate's weight. To protect the internal gears and electronics, you should always leave a "power buffer."
The Buffer Rule: If your gate weighs 400kg, do not push a 400kg-rated motor to its absolute limit. Instead, step up to a 600kg motor.
The Length Factor: If your gate is exceptionally long (e.g., 8 meters) but light (300kg), you still need a larger motor. The motor will be running for much longer cycles, and a 600kg or 1000kg unit will handle that heat and friction far better than a residential entry-level model.
The Slope Penalty: If your gate track is on even a slight slope, gravity makes the motor work significantly harder. Always go up one size to compensate for the incline.
If you aren't sure how much your gate weighs, use this simple field test to estimate the required motor strength:
One Finger: If you can slide the gate open and closed with just one finger, a 400kg motor is sufficient.
Two Fingers: If it takes two fingers to move the gate, we recommend a 600kg motor.
The Whole Hand: If you have to use your whole hand or lean your body weight into it, you likely require a 1000kg+ industrial motor.
The Duty Cycle refers to how many times the gate opens and closes in a day.
Residential Use: If the gate opens roughly 4–10 times a day, a standard residential motor is perfect.
Commercial/Industrial Use: If the gate is for a complex or business where it opens more than 50 times a day, you must invest in an industrial-grade motor designed for high-frequency operation.
If you already have an automated garage door or an existing gate at your workplace, try to stick with the same brand (e.g., Beninca or Merlin). This allows you to program one remote to multiple motors, saving you from carrying a bulky handful of different controllers.
Mains Voltage (240V AC)
This is the most common and reliable setup. It uses a standard 240V plug near the gate.
Note: Many modern motors are labeled as 24V DC, but they still plug into a 240V AC power point. The conversion happens safely inside the motor casing. This provides the safety and "soft-start/stop" features of DC while using standard 240v power.
Low Voltage (Remote Transformer)
This setup is used when you don't have a power point at the gate. You plug a transformer into a house outlet and run a low-voltage cable (usually 12V or 24V) out to the gate.The low voltage setup is a favorite for DIY installations because it typically does not require a licensed electrician for the cable run.
Installation Benefits: Unlike 240V mains power, which requires strict adherence to electrical regulations—such as burying orange conduit 600mm deep—low voltage cable can often be run in standard conduit just 50mm to 100mm below the surface.
The "Voltage Drop" Factor: The main drawback is voltage drop over long distances. To ensure your motor receives enough power to operate reliably, follow these wiring guidelines:
Up to 40 Meters: A standard 3mm (16 amp) cable is sufficient.
40 to 60 Meters: We recommend upgrading to a 6mm (36 amp) cable to reduce resistance and voltage drop.
Over 60 Meters: We generally do not recommend running low voltage power beyond 60 meters, as the motor performance will significantly degrade.
Solar Power Setup
Solar is a fantastic solution for remote properties, but it is the most expensive and least reliable option compared to wired power. We recommend solar only if running a power cable to the gate is physically impossible.
To get a reliable solar system, keep these factors in mind:
Energy Management: You must minimize high-drain accessories (like constant-on Wi-Fi bridges or heavy lighting) to prevent the batteries from going flat. Adding additional solar panels can help the batteries recover faster during the day.
Brand Differences in Power Consumption:
BFT (High Efficiency): BFT systems use a "smart sleep" mode that shuts down the motor and accessories when not in use. The system only wakes up when triggered by a remote, making it one of the best for small battery setups.
Beninca, Merlin, and Sentsys: These brands typically offer a standard setup where the motor stays "active." While this makes it much easier to connect constant-power devices like keypads or GSM openers, it requires a larger battery bank and more solar panels to keep up with the constant draw.
